As you may remember, our son Jason is finishing his final semester at the George Washington School of Medicine. He called last night and we spoke about the dire circumstances in Haiti. He had been part of a medical mission to Haiti during his first years of medical school, and Haiti has had a special place in his heart since. We have become aware of the pioneering work by Dr. Paul Farmer (author of "Mountains Beyond Mountains" and other books and articles) in Haiti, addressing problems of AIDS and TB. Much of the medical relief in Haiti has grown out of Farmer's work, Jason said.
Jason has asked that people wishing to donate to the Haiti relief efforts consider donating to either of two charities associated with Dr. Farmer. They are Partners In Health (www.pih.org) and Project Medishare (www.projectmedishare.org). Jason told us that these organizations are very reliable and ethical, using donations to provide care with minimal administrative overhead. While their scopes are worldwide, the need in Haiti is so clear now. Click on the above links or type in the addresses in the subject line of your browser to see additional information.
Please join us in doing our small part in helping the victims of the recent earthquake, in one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, already dealing with four recent hurricanes. Thank you for your consideration.
